When you saw awful, do you mean the sound quality or the reception? The reception is awful because of the antennas location in the rear bumper.

The sound is extremely boomy- this is true of all new BMW radios. You can tune most of this out to get, what Id call, acceptable performance.

I dont recall my exact settings but if memory serves me right, Ive had to turn the trebble nearly all the way up (maybe 1 notch from the top) and the bass nearly all the way down (maybe 1 notch from the bottom). Then notch the fader slightly in favor of the front speakers and notch the balance slightly in favor of the passenger side (this will give you a better stereo sense as youre sitting close to the drivers side speaker).
