I concur with Z8Eldred and Z8Mania when they express the view that it really comes down to personal tastes. We all have criteria for what moves us, in cars, mates, and all the other choices we make in life. To have the “choice” is the fundamental element in the question. I for one feel very fortunate to have been lucky enough in my business life to be successful enough to even consider a luxury like a Z8. Most people are forced to make compromises in their economic choices since the full range of choices are not within their economic grasp. I am very happy I could choose the Z8 at all.
As to tastes, my Daddy always maintained that if we all had the same taste in cars, we’d all be driving black Fords.
Why did I choose the Z8 over Ferrari and Porsche? Here are some of the reasons, in no particular order:
- I love BMWs, I own 4 right now, 00-Z8, 01-740iL, 00-540i wagon, 98 M Roadster (M3 convertible will replace the M this summer)
- I think the Z8 is one of the most beautiful cars ever built.
- More power and speed than I will ever need in the USA
- HAD to be a convertible
- Reliable, I have NO patience with temperamental cars (or people for that matter;-)
- I do not pass myself everyday when I drive it. For that matter I have never seen another on the road (except my partner’s once, his is only silver/black so it don’t count)
- A very limited production car, from a “large” car manufacturer who will support the car for a long time, since I intend on owning this one as long as I can get in it and lift my leg to the clutch. Most of the major mechanical systems are in production else in the BMW line, most importantly the Motor, drive-train, brakes, etc. that can be a nightmare to fix 20 years after production stops if only a couple thousand were ever built. I view this car as the best of both worlds.

How come you Z8 owners decided to purchase a Z8 over a ferrari or porshce turbo? Although the Z8 is undoubtedly a beautfully well-made and engineered car, it is still just a BMW. This message is out out of pure curiosity, and is not intended to be an insult.
