In order to accommodate a more insolated top and/or a fully automatic top, ala the 3 series, BMW would have had to raise the line of the car about six inches. They choose to keep the low window line and traded a manual boot cover and a thinner top. The intention was that the ragtop was more of an emergency conveniences and the hard top would be used for high speed, cold weather, or long trips. I personally hate the manual top, but I agree with the trade off.

What are you doing driving with the top up anyway?
