I recently purchased a 2001 Z8. It currently has 175 miles on it. I went to start it the other day and the battery was dead. I called the dealer and was told that "this is a normal occurance for this car if you don't start or drive it regularly". I hadn't started it in about a week. They said that the computers on the car are a constant drain on the battery, They then sold me an auto shut-off charger. Has anyone else heard of or experienced this problem??

I am picking up my z8 in a month. Talked to my dealer about it, and he said you have a lazy dealer. 7 days without driving the car is not enough to drain a 'fully charged battery'.

My dealer suggested that your dealer possibly did not check the battery when the car was received. It is possible that the car sat for some time with a battery that may have been bad or discharged prior to you receiving the car.

By the way, BMW usually cover thier batteries for the first 24 months. If the problem continues that frequently (7days or even two weeks), I would have the battery checked or replaced on their Dime. If there is a power drain, then, I would get them to find what is really causing the drain and have the problem corrected if any. They should pay for it.
A good battery could reasonably go bad for cars that sit say for three months at a time without being driven further than say 10 miles to allow the system to recharge the battery.
Like Z8Mania said his sat for 6-weeks with no problem.
This is still a car, albeit a special one, but don't fall for that it's normal stuff.

By the way make the sure the stuff he sold you will not overcharge the battery.
Good luck.
