Until the introduction of the Z8, BMW had not had a “Gray Market” car problem for almost a decade. There has been significant price disparity between the rest of the world, where the Z8 trades very close to MSRP, and the USA where the price has been distorted.

The allocation to the USA was 400 cars last year. In 2001, BMW will import at least 600 with the number going above that if necessary to equalize demand and to squeeze out the gray market cars. This reallocation, total production is not being changed, is having a direct effect on the speculators.

Coupled with the “wealth effect” losses in the stock market, dot.bombs proliferating and consumer confidence eroding here, we should see the price of the car in the USA getting very close to MSRP.

Since it is a limited production car, with a relatively short total production life, it will still command premiums in the USA, just like the M5s and M3s. I agree with other posters to the board, the “resale” activity is not abnormal, and probably has more to do with the economy and supply and demand than anything else.
