Re: Battery life of 2001 Z8 (archive)

I got a Z8 in mid-January. On February 2 I left town for about 9 days. My husband drove the car on 2-3 and on 2-8 the battery was dead. He called the dealer who said it was OK to charge it. So he charged it on 2-10 (for about 6 hours) and on 2-11, when I got back, it was dead again. I took it into the dealer (BMW Concord, CA), who found that the phone equipment was drawing about 50 times the normal draw. This was the phone mechanism itself, not the phone, which was with me on my trip. So they replaced the part and the battery. They told me that they had had two other Z8s in with dead batteries, and in one case they replaced the battery and in the other they replaced the main computer and the battery. So I suspect that BMW has a bug that needs a fix, since the power draws seems to originate in several areas of the car.

I recently purchased a 2001 Z8. It currently has 175 miles on it. I went to start it the other day and the battery was dead. I called the dealer and was told that "this is a normal occurance for this car if you don't start or drive it regularly". I hadn't started it in about a week. They said that the computers on the car are a constant drain on the battery, They then sold me an auto shut-off charger. Has anyone else heard of or experienced this problem??
